I know absolutely nothing about fashion. Frankly speaking, sometimes I found it difficult to go shopping and buy some clothes. Really!… When I go to some clothing store in order to buy jeans, the only thing I think of is how to pick up something and get out of there. Once, I had to ask my friends to help me out and go with me. Is it silly?.. Many people have some issues – that is mine.
Even though I am a complete newbie in fashion, I have to create a report about any fashion designer I like. You know what: they all suck! 🙂
I should probably write something about one fashion designer in order to make them get off me (and by them, I imply my English teacher). So, I looked into Wikipedia and came across one interesting name – Ralph Lauren. Let’s see who he is and what he is.
According to Wikipedia, Ralph Lauren (pronounced as ‘loren’) was born Ralph Lifshitz in the Bronx, New York. Ralph Lauren’s family name was originally Lifschitz, but his father changed it to Lauren when Ralph was 15 years old.
Why on Earth would anyone change such a beautiful and well known family name? A lot of famous people have it, e.g. Evgeny Lifshitz – a famous Russian physicist.
One could think that he changed his family name in order to hide his Jewish background. Not really. “My given name has the word shit in it,” Ralph told Oprah Winfrey. “When I was a kid, the other kids would make a lot of fun of me. It was a tough name. That’s why I decided to change it”. Who knows, maybe if he hadn’t changed his family name, he wouldn’t have become a fashion designer.
Lauren was known by his classmates for selling ties to his fellow students, while dreaming of becoming a millionaire. He did not attend fashion school, but worked for Brooks Brothers as a salesman. In 1967, with the financial backing of Manhattan clothing manufacturer Norman Hilton, Lauren opened a necktie store where he also sold ties of his own design, under the label “Polo.”. In 1971, he’d expanded his line and opened a Polo botique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.
In 1970, Ralph Lauren won the COTY Award for his menswear line. Around that same time he released a line of women’s suits that were tailored in a classic men’s style, which was when the first Polo emblem was seen. It was on the cuff of the women’s suit.
He also gained recognition for his design after he was contracted to provide clothing styles for the movie The Great Gatsby as well as the 1977 film, Annie Hall.
Sometime in early 1987, he was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. In April 1987 he underwent surgery to remove the tumor and made a full recovery.
As of March 2012, Forbes estimates his wealth at $7.5 billion dollars which would make Ralph Lauren the 122nd richest person in the world.
Ralph Lauren is also well known as a collector of automobiles, some of which are extremely rare. A large portion of his over 70 automobiles are held in his estate in Katonah, New York.
Ralph Lauren is always about innovation and creativity. It is not limited by the standard constraints of fashion trends. but it always stays on the peak of popularity and demand. Ralph Lauren’s designs have always been popular with both the world’s fashion elite and usual people seeing in the brand an embodiment of ideals of style and originality.
Today, Ralph Lauren shops are located in dozens of countries of Europe, providing traditional clothes and accessories for well-off men and women as well as more casual clothes (such as jackets, shirts, T-shirts, sweaters, shoes and some accessories). Besides, they extended their line by providing clothes for children.
In Russia, the famous brand of fashionable clothes appeared only in 2007.
Ralph Lauren photoshopped photos of his models to make them look skinnier.

Oddly, both the digitally retouched image, above, and what appears to be the unaltered version, below, both appear on the Ralph Lauren Australia website, inviting instant comparisons.
